More information
As a child, I had casual interest in films, usually costume dramas and period pieces which I adored for their splendour and antiquity. While I am still enchanted by the odd, well-done period film, my current passion for cinema can be blamed, perhaps entirely, on the works of Peter Greenaway. When I was fourteen, I saw "The Pillow Book," and it completely changed the way I thought about films. For the first time, I saw that cinema had the potential to be art, rather than merely a narrative-driven vehicle for entertainment.

Since then, my once casual interest has blossomed into a minor obsession. My undergraduate studies center on literature and drama, and I have aspirations of becoming a dramaturge, but film criticism and analysis have become a de facto part of my Plan of Concentration. A significant portion of my free time is devoted to watching films I've never seen before, and I appreciate and enjoy watching films of almost any kind: From art films, the avant-garde, classics, and foreign films to B-movies, questionable literary adaptations, and soulless blockbusters. My current favourite directors are Peter Greenaway, David Lynch, Federico Fellini, Ingmar Bergman, Jean Cocteau, Jan Svankmajer, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and Terry Gilliam.
